Planting roses is a great way to add some colour and fragrance to your garden. However, planting roses requires some special care and attention. Here are some tips to help you grow beautiful roses:
- Roses need 4 to 6 hours of sunlight daily and should be planted in a clear area with plenty of sunlight. Avoid planting them near trees or other plants as they can block sunlight and their roots can interfere with the growth of the roses. If you are replacing an old rose bush, replace the soil as well to ensure the new rose gets fresh soil to thrive in.
- Consider the type of rose you are planting when deciding where to position it. Ramblers and climbers need to be placed next to trellises, fences, pergolas, or arches where they have enough room to grow. Smaller roses make perfect edging plants and can be mixed with perennials in island beds.
- When planting, dig a hole that is large enough for the size of the root ball and loosen the soil at the bottom. Adding bone meal can provide slow-acting phosphorus which helps establish healthy root growth for the roses.
- The planting depth depends on your climate. If you live in a cooler climate, make sure to plant the roses deeper. If you are planting in a pot, dig 1 inch deeper than the potted level.
- After placing the rose carefully in the hole, refill it with soil so that the roots are covered completely. Water the rose before making the final covering and then mound the soil about 8 inches high around the base of the plant. This protects the stems from drying out until the plant is fully rooted, and excess soil can be removed when the leaves open.
By following these tips, you can enjoy beautiful blooms and wonderful fragrances from your roses.
